Mombasa Island is ringed by creeks and joined to the mainland by bridges and ferries. Residential is the largest land use. Getting around

Three road links join the island to the mainland: Nyali Bridge, Makupa Bridge (replacing the 1929 Makupa Causeway) and Kipevu Causeway. The Likoni ferry crosses to the south coast; the Dongo Kundu bypass, open to traffic since August 2024, links Miritini to Kibundani. The SGR terminus at Miritini is about 11 km from town.
