What Mombasa is like
Coastal county of 229.9 km² of land plus 65 km² of water, bordering Kilifi, Kwale and the Indian Ocean. Six sub-counties (Mvita, Nyali, Changamwe, Jomvu, Kisauni, Likoni) and 30 wards. Population 1,208,333 in the 2019 census: Kisauni 291,930, Likoni 250,358, Nyali 216,577, Jomvu 163,415, Mvita 154,171, Changamwe 131,882. Mombasa Island is ringed by creeks and joined to the mainland by bridges and ferries. Residential is the largest land use. The county lists absentee landlords, tenant-at-will arrangements and historical land injustices as security-of-tenure issues.

- Three road links join the island to the mainland: Nyali Bridge, Makupa Bridge (replacing the 1929 Makupa Causeway) and Kipevu Causeway. The Likoni ferry crosses to the south coast; the Dongo Kundu bypass, open to traffic since August 2024, links Miritini to Kibundani. The SGR terminus at Miritini is about 11 km from town.
